It’s World Kindness Day!
Did you guys know that today is World Kindness Day!? Today is the day where we’re all encouraged to perform random acts of kindness to strangers and loved ones alike!
What’s World Kindness Day?
World Kindness Day was actually introduced by a buncha nations that wanted to encourage their citizens to be kind to one another as well as others. It was first created in 1998, which means we’re about to have year number 19 of perfect world kindness. Well okay, we may not be there yet, but anything worth having requires work!
It’s intention is to focus on the positive benefits of kindness, and highlight the deeds and accomplishments of those who practice it. People hand out kindness cards, give away flowers, hug each other, set up flash mobs, and tons of other heart warming type stuff!
What can I do to be kind?
Well duh, you can do freaking anything! In fact, here is a super fun little Pinterest post with some great trendy ideas. I think my favorite, easy solution is just to smile! We often forget that our outward image is frequently a large part of how other people’s days go. Making eye contact with a stranger, only to have them frown and look away from you can feel really crappy! So don’t be that guy! Why not try smiling at everyone you make eye contact with today? Hey, it might just start a friendship.
What about me!?
Let’s not forget that World Kindness Day is not just for others, but also for us! It’s so easy to criticize yourself for things you aren’t proud of or wish you did better. But today, let’s take a second to relax our inner critics.
One of the things that I care about personally is self kindness. If you follow me, you’ll know that I’m actually currently working on an app for just that purpose. Here’s a YouTube video where I spend a full 48 hours working on a super super simple version of it!
Videos aside, one of the best ways to practice self kindness is simply gratitude and gift giving. When you get home today, why don’t you do something nice for yourself? Maybe a warm bath is the perfect stress relief. Or maybe, like me, you’re a crafter. Make something awesome! Paint something! Exercise! And now, once you’ve finished that, just take a moment and thank yourself for doing that. It was really very kind of you.
